About Templathon

It started with a comment section asking "how do I do this?"

38,000 views, 367 comments, one question. The route video that started Templathon

Templathon started with a route I planned for a YouTuber's temple trip in Kyoto. The video reached 38,000 views, and the comments were full of people asking how to follow it themselves.

Most of the trouble at temples comes from visitors not knowing the etiquette or the history, not from bad intent. Pre-planned routes with that context built in make the visit easier for tourists and calmer for the people who live and work there.

Since then the app has been rebuilt from scratch for iOS and Android and tested on the ground in Kyoto with 170 people.

How routes are made

Three rules for every route.

Tested on foot

Routes are walked and tested with real visitors in Kyoto before they go into the app.

Teach before you arrive

Every stop explains its history and etiquette, so visitors know what's expected before they walk in.

Leave quiet places quiet

We don't publish spots that locals rely on staying uncrowded. Some places stay off the map on purpose.
